$1 a week - really?

We are a group of citizens of Greenethorpe and surrounds, some from established families and some newcomers. Our school and village are suffering from falling numbers, so we hope to encourage families to move here to revitalise the area. There are several houses available for rent on nearby properties, and some in the village itself.

Other towns have led the way with the idea of low-rent houses or low-cost properties, we're following in their footsteps. See the website about the success of the town of Cumnock, and the TV show done by A Current Affair on 20 Mar 2009.

We will be offering these places at low rental to the people we think will be of benefit to the village from the applications we receive. Families with small children of Infants and Primary School ages, committed to our small and caring school, will have a higher chance of success. Renovation skills will also be taken into account for some houses.

So, houses which need work will be offered at $1 a week, plus renovation work and materials provided by the tenants.

Mobile Day Care

comes to the area weekly from Cowra Early Childhood Services. The Mobile service is an award winning children’s service providing long day care to children aged 0 –6 years. It visits Greenethorpe and nearby Koorawatha on alternate Wednesdays. It is subsidised to keep costs low for rural families and at present is $9 a day 9am -3pm. The service is licensed with the Department of Community Services, and is assessed to meet regulations and to ensure that children are educated and cared for in a safe, secure environment by qualified and experienced staff.

The children get very individualised care and each child’s progress is recorded in a detailed portfolio which is given to the child when they move on to big school. The Blue Sky Gallery is owned and operated by the artist, John Hill, who both sculpts and paints. It is usually open on weekends for viewing, but arrangements can be made with John for other times.

Greenethorpe ca.1930

The village was originally called Iandra Siding, being the rail siding for the property of Iandra, belonging to the Greene family. This was quickly changed - Greene asked the Post Office for a different name as his mail (for Iandra Station) was going to Iandra Siding. After some months of deliberation, in September 1908 the name of Greenthorpe was decided on to everyone's satisfaction.

And it only took another month for the spelling to be corrected to Greenethorpe, in accordance with the spelling of the Greene family name.

These letters are from a huge amount of correspondence in the Australian Archives concerning the Post Office at Greenethorpe. As the early PO was in the railway station, this includes letters regarding the railways as well, even a plan of the railway station in 1908 showing modifications for the PO.

Still known as "Stumpy's" after a previous owner, the Post Office is open 9am-5pm Monday-Friday. There is no mail delivery in the village, so collecting mail is a social event where residents can meet and talk each day. Weddin Shire Council Library books are available from here, and are changed each month from the main library in Grenfell.

The General Store sells icecreams, cold drinks, chocolates, milk, bread and other basic foodstuffs. Fuel is not currently available. Locally-produced Art of Espresso coffee is also sold here in vacuum-sealed packets. There is a community notice board outside the store where coming events are publicised.

Greenethorpe

is a small village in the Central West of NSW, between Cowra, Young and Grenfell. We have a population of about 100 in the village, with another 100 people on nearby farming properties. Within the village are a General Store/Post Office, the Shamrock Hotel, Greenethorpe Public School, the Blue Sky art gallery and a Police Station. Art of Espresso Coffee is located nearby.

The village celebrated its centenary in September 2008. It was purpose-built in 1908 to house the share-farmers who worked at Iandra Station, the property of George Henry Greene about 10km away on the road to Young. The property (with its "castle") is open for inspection several times a year, usually on long weekends.
